Rural City of Wangaratta seeks an enthusiastic, suitably qualified and experienced arborist to be the Senior Arborist with our Tree Crew, reporting to the Tree Crew Supervisor. The municipality maintains a large stock of trees of diverse age, size and species, in urban, suburban and rural areas.
The person we are seeking will be enthusiastic about trees, have appropriate experience of tree management works, from planting, formative pruning and establishing newly planted trees, to the full range of tree inspection, assessment, maintenance, pruning and removal works. He/she will have experience in the operation of a range of mechanical plant and equipment including wood chipper, elevated work platform and pneumatic saws and have recognised arboriculture climbing skills.

The successful applicant will require a minimum Certificate III in Arboriculture along with a range of relevant arboriculture certificates and qualifications. A strong commitment to team work and a demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and safely as part of a team is essential. A Senior First Aid Certificate (level 2) and current driver licence endorsed medium rigid is also required.

An understanding and working knowledge of the relevant Australian standards, the regulations regarding native vegetation and tree works, and envelope pruning of rural roads will be essential. The successful person will be capable of inspecting trees, assessing works required and organising and implementing appropriate actions with the team, including filling in for the Tree Crew Supervisor when he is unavailable. Excellent communication skills and an ability to think clearly and show good judgement will be vital in this position. The right person will join a small but dedicated team that aims to constantly improve the quality and diversity of the municipality’s tree stock.

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research (Garvan) is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes, with over 700 scientists, students and support staff. Its mission is to make significant contributions to medical research that will change the directions of science and medicine and have major impacts on human health. 

The Biological Testing Facility (BTF) at Garvan is a centralised Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) facility with housing and phenotypic analysis of small rodents and zebrafish. BTF staff are trained in the care and husbandry of these animals and the facility offers full time veterinary support. The facility contains specialised equipment for phenotyping genetically modified (GM) mice including the oxymax indirect calorimetry, dexascan along with other specialised facilities/equipment to assist with biomedical research including in vivo animal imaging, irradiator, PC2 rodent facilities, variable temperature and reverse light cycle room and the behavioural phenotyping facility.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking two talented and experienced Animal Technicians (AT/SAT) to provide for the care and maintenance of animals used in medical research and to indirectly support research staff involved in animal research. The focus of one position will be primarily on the day-to-day running of the BTF zebrafish facility, however will also involve work within our rodent facility.

This position is a fixed term one year contract with possibility to extend and the flexibility to be full time or part time.

Key Responsibilities

• Responsible for the day-to-day running of the zebrafish/rodent facility including the daily animal husbandry, facility maintenance, water quality checks, production of live food, daily cleaning and changing of animal cages and feeding and watering of animals
• Train other BTF animal technicians to ensure that routine care and management of zebrafish/rodent colonies is performed to a high standard and in an efficient manner
• Coordinate routine preventative maintenance of equipment in animal rooms and laboratories. This includes anaesthetic machines, balances, heat mats and other equipment maintained by the Biological Testing Facility
• Assist in developing, implementing and monitoring a facility quality control (QC) program, providing reports to the BTF Manager / Technician Supervisors.
• Assist the BTF Manager and Technician Supervisors in developing and delivering a zebrafish/rodent researcher training programs
• Participate in the zebrafish/rodent health-screening program, including setting up sentinels, coordination of the collection and dispatch of samples.
• Accurate record keeping and data entry - ability to interpret records and present reports on time. 

About You

In order to be successful in this position, you will demonstrate the following key skills and attributes:

• Relevant TAFE certificate, Bachelor of Science/Marine Science/Biological Sciences Degree or equivalent
• Strong knowledge of regulations pertaining to the use of animals in research
• Strong knowledge of and prior experience in the husbandry, housing and breeding requirements of laboratory zebrafish preferred
• Sound knowledge of the husbandry, housing and breeding requirements of laboratory rodents
• Strong commitment to animal welfare and care
• Prior experience with staff/researcher training
